What is a blog?

I have been hearing this buzz word “blog” from about 3-4 years. At that time the very picture which came to my mind is that it’s a review written by a user about goods, products, travel, etc. which can be shared with the audience. But is this really “blog” all about. Once a friend was discussing about a trip which I found very much interesting. I just told him, “Dude, just post a blog regarding all what you told and add some pictures, it will be a good travel review for the people who are visiting for the first time.” He replied, “What’s a blog?” I wasn’t expecting this reply as that guy is a techie and works for a big million dollar MNC!!! Later, I found many people asking the same question to me. I got it! there’s a need of a collective information about blogs on the net. So, lets see how people define blog:

  • Wikipedia: A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
  • Blogger: A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world.
  • Pvt.com: Short for “Web log,” a specialized site that allows an individual or group of individuals to share a running log of events and personal insights with online audiences.
  • Avatar.co.nz: Web LOG is a journal kept on the Internet. This journal is often updated daily and contains all information that the person maintaining the BLOG (the blogger) wishes to share with the world. The term also applies to Web sites dedicated to a particular topic and being updated with the latest news, views and trends.
  • Germworks.net: Like an online dairy. This can be about and be used for anything at all, it can be used for news, reviews, products etc for a business, organisation etc. This is great as it helps the user stay in touch with the website with new and up to date information.
  • Mason.gmu.edu: A blog is information that is instantly published to a Web site.  Blog scripting allows someone to automatically post information to a Web site. The information first goes to a blogger Web site.  Then the information is automatically inserted into a template tailored for your Web site.
  • Simplehostfinder.com: A BLOG is a publication of personal thoughts, experiences, and web links. It is updated frequently and is usually a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the web or in the media.
  • nowwearetalking.com: Blogs create mindshare amongst a community of people who have an interest in the subject or an affinity with the style of the blogger. Blogs typically have links to other related web content.
  • tig.lsc.gov: This is a term coming from the combination of the terms web log – it is a web page that serves as publicly accessible journal for the author.  It can be formal or informal, is usually updated daily and reflects the personality of the author.
  • economicsnetwork.ac.uk: (from ‘Web log’) an online journal that is easy to update with short messages and links. The software takes care of generating pages and indexes from the various items that you ‘blog’.
  • dottraffic.com: Blogs, a derivation from Web logs, are user-generated Websites for personal use, much like journal entries. Blogs evolve around a certain subject, be it a personal blog where the “blogger” writes in first person, or a political blog, commentary on local news and so on.
  • highspeed.com: A blog is a journal that is available via a website. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog.
  • athroughzcomputing.com: A Blog is an online log or journal that people keep about nearly any topic that interests them. Usually these are kept in a place where others can see them online as well. Blogs allow others to “peek” into your private life and let others know about your thoughts.
  • blogs.law.harvard.edu: A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser.

From here on, one can have his own definition of blog by combining or taking any of these definitions.
